What to expect
The Torre Bellesguard was built by Antoni Gaudí between 1900 and 1909, with straight forms very unusual in his work, inspired by the medieval castle of Martín I el Humano, the last king of the Catalan dynasty of the Casal de Barcelona, who lived in Bellesguard until his death in 1410. Gaudí built a castle halfway between Modernism and Gothic and restored the remains of the medieval palace, which are part of the estate's gardens.
The history of Bellesguard is closely linked to the history of Catalonia. There are many characters and historical events that happened in Bellesguard, which influence and inspire Antoni Gaudí to create one of his most personal, symbolic and fascinating works.
Things to look out for
Gaudi's inspiration for the house was the medieval castle of Martin I, also known as Martin the Humane, the last king of the Catalan dynasty of the House of Barcelona, who resided at Bellesguard until his death in 1410. You will see how he toned down his signature style while still leaving touches of his aesthetics in the building.
Helpful Tips
Make sure to wear comfortable footwear as there will be lots of walking up and down the stairs inside the palace. An audioguide is also available in Catalan, Spanish, English, French, Italian and Russian so you can get the full story of this underrated gem. The audioguide can be used with your own mobile device, however it is important to bring headphones to listen to the audioguide so you don't disturb other visitors. The audioguide tour runs for approximately 1 hour.
