What to expect

As an island nation, Australia has a very strong maritime heritage. Through a series of displays, hands on exhibits, computer games and a cinema, learn how influential seafaring has been to Australia. Enter underwater world submarines, climb a 19th century lighthouse and climb aboard a destroyer. There is a lot to see and do in the distinctive indoor and outdoor attraction. The Navy Ticket includes entry into the Museum galleries, destroyer Vampire, submarine Onslow and the Wharf 7 Maritime Heritage Centre.

Things to look out for

There is so much for kids to see and do at the museum. Be sure to look out for the Mini Mariners Play Zone (for under 5s), the arts and craft activities at Kids on Deck, the immersive action stations and the 3D Cinema. The museum vessels such as the submarine, lighthouse and ship decks all make for fantastic photo opportunities. You are welcome to take photos and video in the museum using existing light only (no flash) and for personal, non-commercial use only.

Helpful Tips

You can expect lots of walking and climbing so make sure the whole family has comfortable footwear. Hats and sun protection are highly recommended. All backpacks and large bags must be stored at the museum cloakroom, located in our main foyer.

There is a café and a kiosk in the museum for snacks and your morning pick-me-up! Free Wi-Fi is also available in the museum.

The museum is accessible to strollers and prams but they aren’t allowed on the vessels. There is lift or ramp access to all exhibition spaces within the main building, and to wharves and the viewing platform outside the museum. There is no wheelchair access on the vessels. Courtesy wheelchairs are available and require a refundable deposit and photo ID. To pre-book a wheelchair, please phone +61 2 9298 3777. Carers are offered free access to vessels.

Getting There

The museum is a 20–30 minute walk from Town Hall and Central Stations. Walk over the Pyrmont Bridge if you’re coming from Town Hall, or stroll through China Town and Darling Harbour if you’re coming from Central. You could also catch the Sydney Ferries' Route F4 services Darling Harbour Loop which runs approximately every half hour and stops at the Pyrmont Bay Wharf (next to the museum). Visit Transport NSW or call 131 500 for more transport information and timetables.
